Kenya Airways Lands Major Milestone with First Boeing 787 Landing Gear Replacement
Kenya Airways has achieved a significant milestone in its engineering and maintenance capabilities by completing its first-ever landing gear replacement on a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
The complex operation, carried out by Kenya Airways' engineers, involved the removal and replacement of the landing gear assembly, followed by systems integration, testing, and certification to ensure the aircraft was airworthy.
The achievement is a major step towards Kenya Airways' ambition to become a leading Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) provider in Africa. The airline's MRO division has been expanding its capabilities, including undertaking its first Boeing 787 D check, the highest-level scheduled maintenance inspection on the aircraft type.
The landing gear replacement is a critical task that requires specialized expertise and equipment. According to Boeing, landing gear generally needs to be overhauled after around 10-12 years of service, depending on usage and model.
