Krishnamoorthi Urges Oil Giants to Cut Emissions Amid Worsening Wildfires
US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has written to four major oil companies, BP, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, and Shell, urging them to reduce their carbon emissions. In letters sent recently, he cited 'growing scientific evidence' linking fossil-fuel emissions with more severe wildfires.
The letters mentioned a 2023 study published in Environmental Research Letters that supported this claim. Krishnamoorthi also pointed out the recent instance of wildfire smoke affecting Chicago on July 16 as an example of the consequences of climate change.
He urged the oil companies to 'acknowledge their role' and take 'meaningful steps' to cut emissions, calling for immediate action from them.
