Qantas Aircraft Narrowly Avoid Collision at Sydney Airport
A recent incident at Sydney Airport has raised concerns about air traffic control procedures after two Qantas aircraft came close to colliding on a runway.
According to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), a Boeing 737 operating as Qantas flight QFA124 from Queenstown to Sydney was cleared by air traffic control to cross runway 34L while a DHC-8, operating as QantasLink flight QLK424D from Canberra to Sydney, was still in its landing roll on the same runway.
The conflict was quickly detected by air traffic control, who alerted the flight crews. The Boeing 737 stopped after the runway's holding point, narrowly avoiding a potentially disastrous collision.
No injuries were reported, but the incident has been classified as 'serious' due to a breakdown in coordination and procedural error.
