KRW1 Expands Global Reach Through Visa Partnership
The South Korean won-backed stablecoin, KRW1, is expanding its reach to over 200 countries through a partnership with Visa. The stablecoin uses a reserve-based model, where for every 1 KRW1 in existence, Woori Bank holds 1 KRW in reserves. This structure separates regulated reserves from on-chain movement.
The current circulation of KRW1 is limited to 142 million tokens, translating to a small number of transactions. Active Wallet Counts are also modest, indicating an early-stage network rather than broad payment adoption. However, with the addition of Visa acceptance at over 175 million merchants, KRW1's reach could expand beyond transfers and settlements to include real-world transactions.
The partnership between Rain and Visa aims to reduce friction across travel, corporate expenses, and cross-border payouts by allowing users to spend KRW1 without converting balances into dollars or exiting through another fiat rail. However, the availability of KRW1 alone cannot prove adoption, as transaction volume, settlement volume, and user spending must rise after cards launch.
