Kurtti's Disney Film Series Dives into Rare Classics
Jeff Kurtti, a renowned Disney historian and author of over 40 books on the company, has launched a new film series at Orange County's Frida Cinema. The Walt Disney Studies film series aims to showcase rare and lesser-known Disney films in a curated manner, providing context and background information about their creation.
Kurtti's interest in developing the series was sparked by his realization that many of Walt Disney's film work is not seen in a theatrical setting. He collaborated with Jeremy Martinez, a young Disney fan, to select the films for the inaugural wave of programming. The duo created a list of 'Got to See It on a Big Screen' movies, choosing titles such as '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,' 'Alice in Wonderland,' and 'Disneyland: Double Documentary.'
The series will feature guest speakers, including Kevin Kidney, a Disney designer and historian, who will discuss '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.' Theodore Thomas, the son of legendary Disney animator Frank Thomas, will join Kurtti to discuss 'Walt and El Grupo' and 'Saludos Amigos.'
Kurtti expressed his enthusiasm for the series, stating that it provides an opportunity for film buffs to see rare Disney films in a communal setting. He plans to continue developing programming for the Frida Cinema, exploring other titles from Disney's rich history.
