La Trobe Launches First Undergraduate AI Engineering Degree in Australia
La Trobe University has launched the Bachelor of AI Engineering (Honours) degree in Australia, marking the country's first undergraduate qualification dedicated to AI engineering. The three-year program is designed to train engineers who can design, build, manage, and support AI systems for various sectors such as healthcare, financial services, transport, logistics, and manufacturing.
The course focuses on deploying AI in areas like manufacturing, robotics, sensors, the Internet of Things (IoT), automation, medical technologies, and production environments. It also covers software skills for agentic AI systems and workflows.
Cisco and Rockwell Automation co-designed the degree with La Trobe University as part of their Digital Skills for Industry partnership established in 2024 to address shortages in artificial intelligence, industrial automation, networking, cybersecurity, and operational technology.
