Lawsuit Alleges Major AI Developers Colluded on Slowdown
A group of major AI developers, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and SpaceXAI, are facing a lawsuit accusing them of entering into an unlawful agreement to slow down their technical advancements.
The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on Friday, alleges that these companies violated federal antitrust laws by colluding on strategies to intentionally slow down the development of AI technology.
The lawsuit centers around a September 12 event, when Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay calling for collective industry efforts to curb rapid progress in favor of enhanced safety measures. Later that day, Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis, OpenAI's Sam Altman, and SpaceXAI's Elon Musk publicly endorsed Amodei's proposals.
The filing maintains that these mutual pledges among dominant industry rivals ensure their timeline 'should be slower than competition would otherwise produce,' which has an anticompetitive effect on consumers. The plaintiffs argue that this agreement diminishes the value provided to customers paying for AI service subscriptions, such as ChatGPT and other services.
