Lawsuit Claims AI Giants Colluded to Slow Down Development
A new lawsuit has been filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California against Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI, and Google. The plaintiffs allege that these leading AI companies made an illegal agreement to slow down their respective AI development.
The lawsuit claims that this coordination took place on September 12, when Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay urging industrywide cooperation on decelerating advancements in favor of enhanced safety measures. The CEOs of OpenAI, SpaceXAI, and Google DeepMind's co-founder and chair Demis Hassabis publicly responded to Amodei's proposals in agreement.
The plaintiffs argue that this coordination has an anticompetitive effect on consumers, as it reduces the value they get from paid AI subscriptions. They do not object to individual companies deciding to slow their progress for safety reasons, but claim that agreeing to a collective restraint is against antitrust laws.
