Lawsuit Targets Leading AI Firms for Alleged Antitrust Agreement
A new lawsuit has been filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California against Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI, and Google, alleging that they made an illegal agreement to slow down their respective AI development.
The lawsuit claims that the coordination among these leading AI companies violated antitrust laws by reducing the value consumers get from paid AI subscriptions.
According to the lawsuit, on September 12, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay urging industrywide cooperation on decelerating advancements in favor of enhanced safety measures. On the same day, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SpaceXAI CEO Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind's co-founder and chair Demis Hassabis publicly responded to Amodei's proposals in agreement.
The plaintiffs argue that an agreement among these chief rivals to slow their progress has an anti-competitive effect on consumers. They contend that the companies violated antitrust laws when they agreed to coordinate slowdown efforts, which would reduce the value consumers get from paid AI subscriptions.
