Lufthansa Flight Diverted to Manchester After Burning Odour on Board

A Lufthansa Boeing 747-400 bound for Toronto was forced to divert to Manchester on September 26 after crew members reported a burning odour in the cabin.

The aircraft, D-ABVY, had departed Frankfurt/Main earlier that day and was cruising at FL330 when the odour was noticed. The pilots quickly decided to turn back and land safely at Manchester Airport's runway 23R about 30 minutes later.

Passengers described electrical failures, including a dead entertainment system and malfunctioning lavatory lights, alongside the burning smell. One passenger reported seeing smoke in the cabin.

Lufthansa sent a replacement Boeing 747-400 to Manchester on September 27, which collected the stranded passengers and continued their journey to Toronto. The original aircraft is expected to remain on the ground while engineers investigate the cause of the odour and electrical failures.
