Lufthansa Flight Diverts Over Burning Smell, Lands Safely at Manchester

Lufthansa flight LH470 from Frankfurt to Toronto made an emergency landing at Manchester Airport on September 26, 2026, due to a burning smell on board. The Boeing 747-400, registration D-ABVY, was about 180 nautical miles north of Manchester when the crew reported the odor and declared a general emergency.

The aircraft landed safely at Manchester's runway 23R, where passengers were disembarked and taken care of by local authorities. The flight was diverted due to the smell of smoke and flickering lavatory lights, which were also reported by some passengers. None of these issues have been confirmed by Lufthansa.

A replacement aircraft, another Boeing 747-400 (D-ABVW), flew the stranded passengers on to Toronto from Manchester. The diversion and subsequent landing at Manchester Airport were a precautionary measure taken by the crew in response to the reported burning smell, which could indicate an electrical fault or hidden fire.
