Lufthansa Group Places Big Bet on Boeing MAX 10

Lufthansa Group has confirmed that its Supervisory Board approved the exercise of options for 20 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft. This decision lifts the group's total 737 MAX order to 60 aircraft, carrying a list value of roughly $3.4 billion.

The deliveries of these aircraft are expected to begin in the early 2030s and will serve as replacements for older Airbus A320 family jets across the Group. However, determining which airline within the group will receive the MAX 10 is not immediately clear, as Lufthansa Group runs seven passenger airlines with different narrowbody profiles.

Eurowings, a part of the Lufthansa Group, seems to be the most likely candidate for receiving the MAX 10. Eurowings has already committed to Boeing's smaller 737-8 model and is expanding its operations on longer leisure routes, where the MAX 10's extra range and seat count would be beneficial.

Lufthansa Mainline and SWISS remain committed Airbus operators and do not appear to have a need for the MAX 10. Austrian Airlines had previously considered the MAX 8 as a replacement for its aging A320 fleet but ultimately opted for additional Airbus A320neo aircraft instead.
