Lufthansa Group ramps up Japan flights for summer 2027 expansion
Lufthansa Group is significantly expanding its services to Japan starting in summer 2027, driven by strong passenger demand. The airline group announced on October 6, 2026, that its airlines will operate up to 50 weekly flights to four Japanese destinations. This expansion includes Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, SWISS, and ITA Airways, which already serve Japan.
From March 29, 2027, Lufthansa will resume its Frankfurt to Nagoya service three times a week, highlighting Nagoya as one of Japan’s key industrial and economic centers. Additionally, starting March 28, 2027, Lufthansa will introduce a daily flight from Frankfurt to Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT), while continuing daily services to Tokyo Haneda International Airport (HND) from both Munich and Frankfurt. These routes will be operated using Boeing 787-9 aircraft in the latest Allegris configuration, featuring 28 business class, 28 premium economy, and 231 economy seats.
SWISS is also increasing its presence in Japan with up to seven weekly flights from Zurich to Tokyo-Narita starting in summer 2027. The current combined services between Europe and Japan by Lufthansa Group’s airlines total approximately 39 weekly flights during late September and early October 2026. The group’s expanded network includes flights to Tokyo-Narita, Tokyo-Haneda, Osaka, and Nagoya.
Dieter Vranckx, CCO of Lufthansa Group, emphasized Japan’s importance as a key market and the group’s commitment to enhancing connectivity between Europe and Japan. The expansion supports the group’s goal of diversifying its intercontinental network and providing more travel options for customers. New data from the World Economic Forum further underscores Japan’s growing popularity as a travel destination.
