Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, resolving one of two cases against him.

The state murder trial is scheduled for September 8. Thompson was shot outside a New York City hotel on December 4, 2024, while walking to UnitedHealth Group's annual investor conference.

Mangione was arrested five days later at a McDonald's restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 233 miles west of New York City. The shooter used a 3D-printed pistol and discarded a backpack containing Monopoly money and a black Tommy Hilfiger jacket as he fled through Central Park.

Prosecutors called Mangione's killing 'a frightening, well-planned, targeted murder that was intended to cause shock and attention and intimidation.' They also revealed notes about a 'survival kit' and 'intel checkin' and possible escape plans found in Mangione's backpack.
