Lula Hails Oil Discovery Off Brazilian Coast Amid Environmental Concerns
Brazil's President Lula has hailed an oil discovery near the Amazon river, but concerns about its impact on the environment remain.
The oil was found in the sea approximately 175km off the coast of Brazil at a depth of 2,886m, according to Petrobras. While the size of the field is unknown, conservationists are worried that extracting the oil could harm the area's biodiversity.
Lula has rejected criticism from environmental groups, calling it 'meddling' and stating that he won't accept foreign interference in Brazil's affairs. He believes that the country needs the revenue generated by oil to fund its transition to renewable energy sources.
The discovery has already given a boost to the local economy in Oiapoque, but concerns about potential accidents and their impact on coastal wetlands remain.
