Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is touting a recent oil discovery near the Amazon River as a potential 'passport to the country's future'. The find, announced by Petrobras on Friday, was made about 180 kilometers off the coast of Amapa state. According to preliminary estimates, the Equatorial Margin could hold up to 10 billion barrels of oil, with a potential value of around $720 billion.

Lula visited an offshore drilling vessel in Oiapoque, Amapa, on Monday and praised the discovery, saying 'All of our studies indicate substantial potential.' He also acknowledged the need for Brazil to transition away from fossil fuels, but emphasized the importance of developing its energy resources. The president faces a tight election in October and is seeking to appeal to voters in northern Brazil.

However, some experts caution that commercial drilling remains a distant prospect at this stage. Shigueo Watanabe Jr., an energy expert with the Brazilian nonprofit ClimaInfo, said determining whether extraction would be commercially viable could take up to a decade.
