MacKenzie Scott Outpaces Jeff Bezos in Philanthropy Despite Holding Significantly Less Amazon Stock
Jeff Bezos and his ex-wife MacKenzie Scott are two of the most influential figures in the world of technology, but their approaches to charity couldn't be more different. While both have pledged to give away significant portions of their fortunes, their progress has been starkly contrasting.
Bezos, the founder of Amazon, owns nearly 13 times more Amazon stock than Scott received as part of their 2019 divorce settlement. The tech mogul's net worth is a staggering $280 billion, making him the world's third-richest man. In contrast, Scott has given away an astonishing five times more money than Bezos.
According to SEC filings analyzed by Luxurylaunches, Bezos holds approximately 879.74 million Amazon shares, while Scott received around 139 million shares, representing about a 4% stake in the company. However, it's not just the number of shares that sets them apart - Scott has donated an incredible $27 billion to over 2,500 organizations.
Bezos' philanthropic efforts, on the other hand, have been more measured, with his Bezos Earth Fund distributing around $2.4 billion so far. In comparison, Scott's net worth remains remarkably resilient, despite giving away tens of billions of dollars. She currently sits at a fortune of approximately $34 billion, down from her peak of between $36 billion and $38 billion in 2019.
Scott's generosity has been unwavering, with the billionaire donating an astonishing $7.2 billion alone in 2025. This surpasses the combined lifetime donations of Bezos and his partner Lauren Sanchez, according to Forbes estimates.
