Magnetic Navigation Takes Flight Amid Rising GPS Threats
Rising concerns over GPS jamming and spoofing have prompted researchers to explore alternative navigation methods. The threat of satellite signal interference has grown significantly, with a 220% increase in GPS signal-loss events between 2021 and 2024 recorded by the International Air Transport Association.
To combat this issue, Honeywell Aerospace and Australian technology company Q-CTRL are developing separate magnetic navigation systems using highly sensitive quantum sensors. These instruments detect tiny variations in Earth's magnetic field and compare them with mapped patterns to determine an aircraft's position without GPS.
The approach has shown promising results, with a recent demonstration aboard an Embraer 170 test bed achieving an 89% improvement in position accuracy compared to traditional backup navigation methods. Q-CTRL's Ironstone Opal system has also achieved safety-of-flight qualification and demonstrated positioning accuracy better than 0.3 nautical miles for 95% of a flight.
