The rising cost of memory chips has led to a surge in demand for magnetic tape storage. The LTO Consortium, composed of HPE, IBM, and Quantum, reported a 57% year-on-year increase in total shipped capacity of LTO-compatible tape media in the first quarter of 2026.

According to CEO Hugues Meyrath of Quantum, magnetic tape is re-establishing its core strategic position in modern data infrastructure. The growth momentum is driven by AI training and inference workloads, as well as traditional data archiving demands.

Magnetic tape has become a cost-effective solution for storing cold data due to its low marginal cost per TB. It also offers security and environmental protection benefits, such as isolating network attacks and reducing carbon emissions.
