'Magnificent Seven' Companies Face Tough Choice Between AI Growth and Cash Flow

The 'Magnificent Seven' companies, which have been at the forefront of the AI revolution, are facing a difficult decision as they struggle to maintain their growth and valuation. The seven companies - Apple (AAPL), Nvidia (NVDA), Alphabet (GOOGL), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), Meta Platforms (META), and Tesla (TSLA) - have been investing heavily in AI-related projects, but this has resulted in negative free cash flow for some of them. For example, Alphabet is expected to spend between $195 billion and $205 billion on capex this year.

The companies are prioritizing their AI investments over generating positive free cash flow, which could lead to a depletion of their cash reserves and an end to share buybacks. However, if they were to cut back on their spending, it could negatively impact their competitive edge in the market.

On the other hand, Apple and Tesla have managed to maintain positive free cash flow by keeping their capex at historically normal levels. However, this has come at the cost of lower long-term growth prospects for these companies. For instance, Tesla is currently trading at 139 times Wall Street's consensus earnings per share (EPS) for 2027.
