Maharashtra and Coca-Cola Expand PET Recycling Initiative in Thane
The Government of Maharashtra, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), and Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB) have expanded the Maha r-PET Abhiyaan in Thane. The initiative includes the launch of a dedicated Thane PET Collection Centre and several programs aimed at improving the collection, segregation, and recycling of used PET bottles across the city.
Key initiatives launched include dedicated used PET Collection Bins, the Maha r-PET Abhiyaan Participation Certificate, and Green Cool Dukaan Stickers for retailers. The program also flagged off three electric vehicles to support collection operations and unveiled benches made from recycled PET plastic collected through the initiative.
The event was attended by Smt. Pankaja Munde, Hon'ble Minister for Animal Husbandry, Environment & Climate Change, Government of Maharashtra, along with other officials, actors, and stakeholders from the PET collection and recycling ecosystem. Munde emphasized the importance of community participation, noting that the 'use and throw' culture is being replaced by 'use and collect.'
Avinash Kant Kumar, Head of Integrated Supply Chain at HCCB, highlighted the importance of collaboration across the value chain for building a robust used PET bottle recycling ecosystem. The Thane Collection Centre is designed to strengthen the recovery and channelization of used PET bottles into authorized recycling streams, supporting circular economy objectives.
