A Malden building on Salem Street is set to be transformed into housing for veterans experiencing homelessness. The project, led by Volunteers of America of Massachusetts, has received a nearly $2 million investment from state officials and a national nonprofit foundation.

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities and Executive Office of Veterans Services awarded the project $1.8 million, while The Home Depot Foundation contributed an additional $150,000. The renovation is expected to be completed by 2027, providing 12 apartments for veterans in Greater Boston and on the North Shore.

The Malden development aims to address the need for housing among local veterans, who face challenges such as rising living costs. According to Volunteers of America of Massachusetts, more than 32,000 veterans experience homelessness on any given night nationwide.
