Man Admits to Killing UnitedHealthcare CEO in Guilty Plea
Luigi Mangione, a 28-year-old man from New York, has pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges in connection with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The killing took place in Manhattan in December 2024, and Mangione was subsequently arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Mangione's guilty plea comes after he admitted in court that he shot and killed Thompson as he walked alone outside a hotel in midtown Manhattan. He also acknowledged that his actions would have placed the victim in fear of death or bodily injury, and that he knew what he was doing was illegal.
The Justice Department initially sought the death penalty for Mangione, but U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett blocked this in January. As a result of his guilty plea, Mangione's lawyers are expected to seek dismissal of some or all charges in his state case.
Thompson's family released a statement after Mangione's guilty plea, saying that it marked an important step towards justice for their loved one. They also expressed their hope that sentencing would reflect the severity of the crime.
