Mangione Expected to Plead Guilty in Federal Case Over UnitedHealthcare CEO's Killing

Luigi Mangione, a Maryland native accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is expected to plead guilty to federal charges associated with the killing. According to reports from The New York Times and NBC News, citing people familiar with the case, Mangione's lawyers are planning to enter a plea on his behalf in January.

The 28-year-old was scheduled to go on trial in federal court in January on charges of stalking resulting in death, which could carry a potential life sentence. However, it is unclear what specific details will be included in the plea agreement, and Mangione's lawyers have not ruled out reversing their decision at any time.

Mangione also faces several state charges in New York, including second-degree murder, as well as weapons and forgery counts. His lawyers are expected to seek dismissal of some or all of these charges if he pleads guilty to the federal charges.

The shooting occurred on December 4, 2024, when Thompson was killed as he walked to UnitedHealth Group's annual investor conference. Surveillance video showed a masked gunman shooting him from behind.
