Luigi Mangione, the defendant in the high-profile murder case of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, pleaded guilty to two charges on Friday. He appeared at a surprise hearing in Manhattan federal court to change his plea from 'not guilty' to 'guilty'. The hearing marked the first time Mangione had publicly detailed his actions leading up to the crime.

Mangione read a lengthy statement about how he stalked and killed Thompson, the United Healthcare CEO, on December 4, 2024, in Midtown Manhattan. He described navigating the healthcare industry, enduring severe pain from a broken back, and witnessing similar experiences of countless others. Mangione stated that he researched the investor conference online and observed that the attendees were not doctors, nurses, and patients but company executives and investors.

Mangione claimed to have posed as an investor at a firm managing over $50 billion in assets and requested information about the conference via email. He received an immediate response within an hour, which he believed was unusual given his previous interactions with insurers. Mangione used a 3D printer to make a gun, adding a silencer and magazine.

Following his statement, Judge Margaret Garnett scheduled a sentencing hearing for December 18. Mangione's lawyers filed a motion for his New York state murder charges to be dismissed, arguing that it would constitute double jeopardy.
