Mangione Pleads Guilty to Stalking Charges in High-Profile Shooting Case
Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges in connection with the December 2024 shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City. The plea comes as part of a strategy by Mangione's attorneys, who hope it will spare him the death penalty.
Mangione admitted that he traveled to New York with the intent to shoot Thompson and posed as an investor to find his location. He used a 3-D printed gun in the attack. According to Mangione's attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, Mangione struggled with severe back pain and felt defeated by the healthcare system.
Prosecutors, however, described the killing as a calculated act. 'This was not a spontaneous act of violence. It was deliberate, calculated and premeditated,' said Jamie McDonald, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
