Mangione Set to Plead Guilty in Federal Court
Luigi Mangione, a 28-year-old Ivy League graduate, is expected to plead guilty in federal court on Friday to charges related to the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson.
Mangione was weeks away from going on trial in state court when he appeared for his final pretrial hearing on Tuesday. However, hours after the hearing, an impromptu session in federal court was scheduled for Friday morning between Mangione and federal prosecutors.
According to The New York Times, Mangione is reportedly set to agree to a plea deal, which would derail his impending state trial. If approved by the federal judge, the plea deal could result in up to 25 years to life in prison if he is convicted of the multiple state charges, including second-degree murder and weapons possession.
Mangione's lead defense attorney has sought to dismiss the state's murder indictment on grounds of double jeopardy, but the Manhattan district attorney's office argues that the state charges are different from those in the federal indictment.
