Mangione State Murder Trial Postponed Amid Double Jeopardy Fight
Luigi Mangione's state murder trial has been postponed indefinitely due to his lawyers' efforts to have the case thrown out on double jeopardy grounds. Mangione pleaded guilty last week to federal charges related to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and is scheduled to be sentenced in December.
The Manhattan District Attorney's office, which is prosecuting the state case, will respond to the defense's claims by October 9. A hearing is set for December 10, just before Mangione's federal sentencing.
Mangione's lawyers argue that he cannot be punished twice for the same conduct and are seeking to have the state case dismissed. The Manhattan District Attorney's office disagrees, saying that the state charges involve different legal elements and criminal conduct than the federal charges.
