Mariellen Merck Remembered as Beloved Community Leader and Matriarch
Mariellen Patricia “Pat” Schaaf Merck, a beloved community leader and devoted family matriarch, passed away peacefully at her home in Tillson, New York, on October 2, 2026. Born on May 5, 1936, in Dayton, Ohio, Pat lived through the Great Depression and carried its lessons of gratitude and resilience throughout her life. She married James John Merck in 1957, and together they raised four children in Tillson, where she remained until her passing.
Pat was known for her vibrant spirit and deep love for people. She treasured conversations, often engaging in long phone calls, and thrived in the company of family and friends. Her 90th birthday celebration in May 2026 was a testament to her wide circle of loved ones, who traveled from across the country to honor her. Reflecting on the event, Pat remarked how lovely it was and how many memories she would carry forward.
Throughout her life, Pat was an active community leader, serving as past president of the Rosendale Women’s Club and the Rosendale Library. She also ran the Rosendale Community Medical Equipment Loan Closet and was deeply involved in St. Peter’s Church in Rosendale. In addition to her community work, Pat was an accomplished oil-on-canvas painter and enjoyed traveling, visiting the United States, Europe, South America, and even Russia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter’s Church on October 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., followed by burial at St. Peter’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at George J. Moylan Funeral Home on October 7, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hudson Valley Hospice or St. Peter’s Church.
