The stock market indexes showed minimal movement on Tuesday as investors held back ahead of Wednesday's inflation report, which could have significant implications for interest rates and overall market direction.

Oil prices rose by about 1.4% to reach $83 per barrel after Iran reiterated its stance that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until certain conditions are met, including sanctions relief and compensation.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) was down 0.08%, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) fell by 0.12% and the Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) dropped 0.32%. The decline in the indexes was largely due to a 2.2% drop in Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) and Amazon (AMZN), which together accounted for nearly the entire Nasdaq decline.

On the other hand, some stocks showed significant gains, including Caterpillar (CAT), which rose by 1.4%, and SK Hynix (SKHY), which jumped 2.6% despite a mixed bag of performance from memory chip makers like Micron Technology (MU).
