Markets Gain on Easing Inflation Hopes and Strong Bank Earnings
The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average posted modest gains on Wednesday, driven by cooler-than-expected producer prices and strong earnings from major banks and ASML. The S&P 500 rose 0.35%, while the Dow added 0.26%. However, the Nasdaq 100 declined 0.62% as memory stocks experienced a sell-off.
The Producer Price Index (PPI) for June fell 0.3% month-over-month, the largest decline in over a year, easing inflation concerns. This followed a softer Consumer Price Index (CPI) report the previous day, bolstering hopes for a 'soft landing' and tempering expectations for aggressive rate hikes.
Earnings season highlighted strong performances from financial institutions like Morgan Stanley and BlackRock, which reported significant beats. Meanwhile, semiconductor equipment maker ASML surged after delivering a strong earnings beat and raising its sales outlook due to robust AI-driven demand. However, memory chip stocks such as SK Hynix (SKHY) and Micron (MU) fell sharply amid profit-taking.
PayPal (PYPL) was a standout, surging on reports of a potential $53+ billion take-private offer from Stripe and Advent International. Apple (AAPL) also made headlines, exploring acquisitions of AI chip startups to enhance its in-house server chip capabilities.
