Maryland's Quantum Ecosystem Gains Momentum with Discovery Center Launch
The University of Maryland has unveiled its new Discovery Center in College Park, marking a significant milestone for the state's quantum ecosystem. The center brings together Microsoft, international quantum companies, university researchers, and startups under one roof.
Microsoft's investment in the quantum research center at the University of Maryland has reached $500 million, with the company's Executive Vice President for Discovery and Quantum, Jason Zander, calling it 'core' to their strategy. The facility will support Microsoft's work on the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative.
The Discovery Center is part of Maryland's five-year program, Capital of Quantum, which aims to attract $1 billion in investment across quantum research, company growth, infrastructure, and workforce development. The initiative has already reached its halfway point with less than two years since its inception.
