Mass Layoffs Hit Major US Companies Amid Uncertainty
A fresh wave of mass layoffs is hitting US workers in August, with major companies such as Amazon, Walmart, and FedEx among those filing notices of job cuts.
The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) records show that over 20 employers have filed official notices across multiple states, affecting various sectors including food production, logistics, retail, higher education, healthcare, and defence contracting.
Amazon has lodged several California WARN notices, targeting staff in San Bruno and Sunnyvale locations, with one site set to lose 88 employees and others shedding between 49 and 68 staff each.
Layoffs are not a new phenomenon, but analysts suggest that uncertainty is driving this steady flow of job cuts. Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor at the University of Tennessee at Martin, believes that while politicians and economists may point to various factors such as inflation or technology disruption, they ultimately circle the same drain.
The 'low-hire, low-fire' economy is becoming increasingly uneven, with legacy retailers cutting back alongside logistics players and hospitality services.
