This uptick includes newcomers like Eli Lilly, which made a strong showing among the top 20.

Sanofi and Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. follow closely behind, with 4,834 and 4,566 employees respectively. These companies focus on a range of therapeutic areas, including rare diseases, vaccines, and general medicines.

EMD Serono & MilliporeSigma: Businesses of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany rounds out the top four with over 3,700 Massachusetts employees. Global science and technology leader, this company operates across high growth markets in life science, healthcare, and electronics.
