Massive Amazon Crackdown Nets Hundreds of Arrests and Millions in Stolen Goods

A massive crackdown on environmental crime in the Amazon rainforest has resulted in hundreds of arrests and seizures of timber, minerals, and wildlife. The operation, called Operation Green Shield 2026, involved over 3,600 officers from five countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.

The police action, which ran from July 15-31, targeted illegal mining, logging, wildlife trafficking, fuel smuggling, and land grabbing. During the operation, authorities arrested 839 people and seized over 280,000 cubic meters of illegally harvested timber - enough to fill roughly 110 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The seizure also included 195 metric tons of minerals, such as gold, carbon, iron, and copper, used in illegal mining. Additionally, more than 3,000 live animals were rescued, and at least 430 dead animals linked to wildlife trafficking were recovered.
