Mastercard Emerges as Top Payments Stock Amid Rivalry with Visa
Mastercard may be the better long-term bet for investors compared to other prominent payments stocks like Visa, according to recent analysis. One of the key factors driving Mastercard's growth is its high operating margins and strong potential for long-term expansion.
The company has a slight edge over its competitor Visa in terms of revenue and earnings per share (EPS) growth. Last quarter, Mastercard reported 14% and 22% revenue and EPS growth, respectively, while Visa reported similar revenue growth but only 10% EPS growth.
Analyst forecasts call for Mastercard's EPS to grow 52% between 2026 and 2029, which is higher than the forecasted 46.2% EPS growth for Visa. However, both stocks carry risks due to their high earnings multiples and exposure to macroeconomic conditions. A global economic slowdown could serve as a headwind for both companies.
Despite these risks, Mastercard's steady revenue stream, low capital intensity, and high margins make it an attractive long-term investment opportunity. The company's ability to collect fees on every card swipe or digital payment transaction processed through its network provides a stable source of income.
