McDonald's Bets Big on AI and Menu Overhaul to Revive Sales
McDonald's has unveiled its ambitious 'McDonald's > NEXT' strategy to revamp its restaurants, technology, and menu to compete with aggressive competitors. The company is committing approximately $8.5 billion in support for franchisees through 2036, with $5 billion expected to be deployed by 2030.
The plan includes renovating stores, improving food quality, simplifying restaurant operations, and deploying its GenAI-enabled ArchIQ technology across more locations. A new 'Make It Golden' initiative will begin on October 5, focusing on food quality and hospitality across the chain.
McDonald's is targeting growing demand for chicken, beverages, and higher-protein meals, including testing products like burger and chicken bowls, egg bites, and additional grilled chicken options. The company estimates that its changes could generate around 250 basis points of gross restaurant-level efficiency, equivalent to approximately $100,000 in additional annual cash flow for the average US restaurant.
However, investors were less enthusiastic about the huge spending commitment, with McDonald's stock falling 4.81% on September 23 to close at $238.32.
