McDonald's CEO Contradicts Fed on Inflation Outlook
McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski has revealed that elevated inflation will persist for 'many more years' at an elevated level, contradicting the Federal Reserve's recent decision to raise interest rates. This warning comes just six days after the Fed hiked rates to 4.00%, with Kempczinski stating that the industry is unlikely to experience robust traffic growth.
Kempczinski made these comments during McDonald's investor day on September 23, 2026, where he acknowledged that the company has been affected by a pressured consumer environment. The fast-food giant reported second-quarter U.S. comparable sales of just 0.8%, with global comps decelerating to +1.3% from +3.8% a year earlier.
The CEO's comments are concerning, given that McDonald's shares have already dropped 22% this year. The company has also delayed its goal of reaching 50,000 restaurants globally to 2028, citing the cumulative inflationary impact on development costs.
