McDonald's Chairman Appointment Sparks Governance Concerns at Boohoo
Boohoo Group Plc has appointed Iain McDonald as its new chairman to help rebuild equity value, but the move has sparked controversy. McDonald's past association with the company raised corporate governance concerns that led broker Shore Capital to drop coverage of Boohoo.
The online clothing retailer's shares dropped 2.2% at close in London after the announcement, continuing a downward trend of over 90% since their peak in 2020. This includes buying the Debenhams department store chain and turning it into an online marketplace for thousands of brands across fashion, home, and beauty.
Analysts like Clive Black suggest that Boohoo should have sought an external candidate to ensure a fresh perspective and distance from past controversies. McDonald's appointment is seen as a step in the wrong direction, with Black saying it's 'the antithesis of what they need.'
