McDonald’s Discontinued Menu Items Fans Still Miss
McDonald’s has a long history of introducing innovative menu items, but not all of them become permanent fixtures. Some discontinued favorites have left a lasting impression on fans, who continue to hope for their return. The McRib, for instance, has been a limited-time offering since its debut in 1981, with its most recent return to select US and UK locations in late 2024. Despite its popularity, it remains a temporary treat.
Other notable discontinued items include the Donut Sticks, launched in 2019 as a sweet companion to McCafé coffee, and the Super Hero Burger, a 1995 limited-edition burger inspired by the Batman Forever movie. The burger featured three patties, two types of cheese, and an oversized bun, but it never made a comeback.
The McDLT, introduced in the mid-1980s, aimed to keep lettuce crisp by separating hot and cool ingredients in Styrofoam packaging. However, environmental concerns led to its discontinuation. Similarly, the Strawberry and Toffee Sundaes were removed from UK menus in 2018 due to low popularity and government sugar recommendations, though they remain available in a few international locations.
Some items, like the McHotDog, faced opposition from company founder Ray Kroc, who disliked the unhealthy nature of the classic American dish. Despite occasional appearances in various countries, it never gained lasting traction. These discontinued items highlight McDonald’s willingness to experiment, even if some experiments don’t stand the test of time.
