McDonald's Franchisee Support Plan Sparks Stock Price Decline
McDonald's is investing $8.5 billion in its franchisees through 2036 as part of its NEXT strategy, which aims to modernize its global restaurant network. The investment includes $5 billion in support by 2030 and will provide rent relief and capital contributions. However, investors are concerned about the near-term cash-flow implications of this significant investment.
The company's stock fell nearly 6% on Wednesday after unveiling the plan and long-term growth targets at its investor day. McDonald's expects the benefits from modernization and technology to accumulate over several years but warns that the upfront financial commitment could weigh on cash generation in the meantime.
McDonald's delayed its target of reaching 50,000 restaurants worldwide from 2027 to 2028 due to cautious consumer spending and higher cumulative inflation in construction and development costs. The company aims for operating margins in the low-to-mid 50% range by 2030 and targets market share gains in chicken and beverages.
