McDonald's Shares Plummet on $8.5 Billion Franchisee Support Plan
McDonald's shares plummeted to a multi-year low after the fast-food giant announced an $8.5 billion franchisee support plan, which includes around $5 billion in rent relief and capital support through 2030. The stock fell as much as 6.5% during the session, reaching its lowest level in nearly four years at $234.03.
The company's shares ended the day at $238.32, down 4.81%, with trading activity unusually heavy. Over 13.8 million shares changed hands, nearly three times the 20-day average, according to AskTraders. The market reaction reflects concerns about the timing of the investment, as McDonald's is committing substantial resources now while benefits from restaurant upgrades and technology improvements are expected to develop over several years.
As part of its NEXT strategy, which focuses on food quality, hospitality, value, and innovation, McDonald's plans to modernize locations, simplify restaurant operations, strengthen employee training, and expand the use of its AI-powered ArchIQ operating system. The company also expects industry traffic in its wholly owned markets to remain flat while inflation remains elevated.
