McDonald's Stock Suffers Post-Earnings Plunge
McDonald's stock has taken a hit after its second-quarter earnings report revealed weak US comparable sales growth, prompting investors to wonder if it's time to buy in. The company's shares have slid 31% from their high of $341.75 this spring and are currently trading at a 52-week low.
US comparable-store sales grew only 0.8% in the second quarter, which management attributed to execution missteps, including the withdrawal of digital offers and the Buy One, Add One program. These changes hurt traffic and dragged on US comps sales in an already weak consumer spending environment.
However, experts argue that these issues are fixable in the near term and don't signal a broken brand. McDonald's has a massive customer base to monetize, with over 70 million customers visiting daily and nearly 220 million signed up for its app and loyalty program.
