McDonald's US business struggled with customer traffic in the second quarter, falling behind expectations. The company cited too many limited-time promotions and menu confusion as the main reasons for the decline.

The comparable sales in the US were 0.8% compared to 2.5% during the same period last year. Despite positive check growth and a favorable product mix, the results were offset by negative guest counts.

McDonald's CEO Christopher Kempczinski acknowledged that the company didn't execute its promotions at the level needed, citing overwhelmed restaurant teams due to too many deployments in the quarter.
