Media Coalition Releases AI Content Tracking Standard
A coalition of media organizations has released a new standard for tracking how AI tools use publishers' content. The Standards for Publisher Usage Rights initiative (SPUR) created the content telemetry standard, which will track and report what happens when content is retrieved, grounded, cited, presented, and engaged with AI tools.
SPUR invited OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Microsoft to join its AI Licensing Advisory Board. If they accept, they'll help ensure the standard reflects the entire AI ecosystem.
The standard creates a process for publishers to track their content's usage and receive data on when it is retrieved or used in an AI-generated answer. This could give them consistent data to use as a starting point in licensing discussions.
