Megacap Stocks: Walmart Struggles, while UnitedHealth and Eli Lilly Shine
Megacap stocks have their pros and cons. On one hand, they're industry leaders that set the tone for their sectors due to their massive scale, often resulting in wide moats. However, this can also be a double-edged sword as these companies typically exhaust their existing market opportunities and must invest heavily to expand further.
One such megacap stock facing headwinds is Walmart (WMT), with a market cap of $816.7 billion. The retail giant's large revenue base makes it challenging for the company to increase sales quickly, and its annual revenue growth of 5.3% over the last three years was below our standards for the consumer retail sector.
On the other hand, UnitedHealth (UNH) and Eli Lilly (LLY) are two megacap stocks with attractive long-term potential. UnitedHealth's strong financials, including a 10.6% annual revenue growth over the last five years and an industry-leading 19.2% return on capital, demonstrate management's skill in finding high-return investments.
Eli Lilly has also seen impressive growth, with its annual revenue rising by 43.1% over the past two years and adjusted operating margins improving by 18.7 percentage points during the same period. The pharmaceutical company's share buybacks have catapulted its annual earnings per share growth to 31.4%, outperforming its revenue gains over the last five years.
