Melius Upgrades Microsoft on AI Security and Governance Opportunities
Microsoft (MSFT) has received a bullish upgrade from Melius Research, which argues that rising enterprise concerns about artificial intelligence could actually boost demand for Microsoft's security, governance, and cloud platforms. Analyst Ben Reitzes upgraded the stock to Buy from Hold and set a price target of $665, suggesting roughly 28% upside from the current share price.
Reitzes believes that enterprises are growing more cautious about deploying AI models and agents, which creates demand for trusted platforms that can control model access, manage agent behavior, and add security and governance layers. He views Microsoft as especially well positioned to benefit from this shift, describing CEO Satya Nadella and his team as the adults in charge of AI.
The stronger security and governance opportunity could also support Microsoft's pricing power across products including its E7 suite and Fabric. Melius is also becoming more optimistic about Microsoft's core applications and Azure, with Reitzes arguing they may face less disruption from agentic AI tools than some competing software vendors. He expects Azure growth to accelerate above 50% by the fourth quarter of fiscal 2027.
Melius also raised its earnings estimates, lifting fiscal 2027 EPS by about 2% and fiscal 2028 EPS by roughly 4%, while introducing a fiscal 2029 EPS estimate of $30.77, around 7% above consensus. The next catalysts include Microsoft's fiscal first-quarter 2027 earnings report on October 27 and its Ignite conference in November.
