Merck and Moderna's Cancer Vaccine Shows Promising Results in Preventing Melanoma Recurrence
Pharmaceutical giants Merck and Moderna announced promising results for their experimental cancer vaccine in preventing melanoma recurrence. The mRNA-based vaccine, called Intismeran, was tested in a late-stage trial involving high-risk melanoma patients who had undergone surgery.
The study enrolled 1,137 patients, with half receiving the vaccine-drug combo and the other half getting Keytruda alone for about a year. Interim results showed that the vaccine-drug combo extended the time before cancer returned in high-risk patients, although the companies did not specify how long.
Merck and Moderna have been working on this vaccine for over a decade, aiming to train the immune system to identify and kill cancer cells by targeting abnormal proteins called neoantigens. The personalized vaccine can be tailored to individual patients using genetic material from their tumors.
The companies described the results as a 'breakthrough' in cancer research and stated that the study would continue to examine overall survival rates following the treatment. Merck's CEO, Stéphane Bancel, said, 'For many years, the idea of creating an mRNA treatment designed specifically for an individual patient's cancer was aspirational... We are now helping turn that vision into a reality.'
The vaccine-drug combo showed mild to moderate side effects, but some patients experienced adverse reactions that forced them to discontinue or delay treatment.
