Merck and Moderna's Personalized Cancer Therapy Shows Promising Results in Melanoma Trial
A new treatment approach for high-risk melanoma has shown promising results in a Phase 3 trial. Merck and Moderna's personalized mRNA-based cancer therapy, intismeran, met the main recurrence-free-survival goal of the INTerpath-001 trial. The trial involved 1,137 patients with completely resected melanoma who had not previously received systemic therapy.
The combination of intismeran and Keytruda, a PD-1 checkpoint inhibitor, showed improved results compared to Keytruda alone. However, the companies have not released numerical results, limiting what can be inferred about the treatment's effectiveness.
The personalized nature of intismeran is key to its approach. It involves sequencing a patient's tumor and identifying mutations that may produce abnormal proteins recognizable to the immune system. The mRNA treatment encodes up to 34 selected neoantigens, aiming to train immune cells to recognize tumor-related targets.
