Merck Bolsters Pipeline as Keytruda Patent Cliff Looms
Merck (NYSE:MRK) is facing a patent cliff with its blockbuster immuno-oncology medicine Keytruda, which has been driving a large share of demand for the company. The loss of exclusivity on Keytruda will allow lower-cost biosimilar competition to erode the branded franchise.
Merck is preparing for this challenge by broadening its pipeline across oncology, vaccines, and cardiometabolic care. The company is also extending its flagship franchise through new formulations and using acquisitions and partnerships to build fresh sources of demand.
Merck's strategy beyond oncology includes strengthening its vaccine franchise, including its human papillomavirus vaccine, and moving deeper into cardiometabolic care with treatments for serious cardiovascular conditions.
